This collection of Humphrey Marshall Papers includes correspondence regarding Marshall's military service for the Confederacy. Included are letters to Marshall from Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, a letter from James Longstreet to Henry Giltner, and a post-war letter from Marshall to Edward O. Guerrant. Of particular interest is the letter Davis in which the Confederate president castigates Marshall for criticizing the War Department for his failures in the field. The materials in this collection were collected by Edward O. Guerrant, who served as Marshall's aide during the war.
